Vandals shoot at historic cross
Religious leaders in south Yorkshire have appealed to vandals to stop repeatedly damaging an historic cross, which has been a landmark for 40 years.
The iconic cross, 800ft (240m) up a hill at Stocksbridge, is lit up every Easter and its bulbs have been shot out twice since Maundy Thursday.
The 30ft (9m) cross is owned jointly by the 10 churches in the Stocksbridge Churches Together group.
Secretary Graham Helliwell said the damage was probably done by a shotgun.
He said: "We are asking people to think about what they are doing.
"This cross can be seen from many miles away and it means a lot to local people.
"We are asking the vandals to leave it alone.
"We have just replaced the bulbs for the third time in almost as many days and we want this to stop."
While disapproving of such destructive behaviour, I can fully understand why some might want to see an end to the Christian domination of the landscape.
But it's only for a long weekend...
